Clijsters to announce plans amid comeback rumors

BRUSSELS (AP) -Former top-ranked Kim Clijsters will hold a news conference Thursday amid reports she is planning a return to the WTA Tour.

The 25-year-old Belgian, who retired two years ago, will ``unveil her plans for 2009'' at the tennis center where she has been recently training.

The Het Belang van Limburg regional newspaper said she was set to enter top-level tournaments. The VTM television network said she may target the U.S. Open, where she won her only Grand Slam title in 2005, as the highlight of her season.

A spokeswoman for Clijsters did not return phone calls.

Though she no longer has a WTA ranking, Clijsters could receive wild cards for any tournament she wants to enter.

Clijsters retired from the WTA Tour in May 2007. She married pro basketball player Brian Lynch and gave birth to a daughter, Jada, in February 2008.

Fellow Belgian star Justine Henin retired last year while still ranked No. 1.

In her last competitive match two years ago, Clijsters lost in the Antwerp Diamond Games final to France's Amelie Mauresmo before a capacity crowd of 14,500 at the Sport Palace.

Clijsters recently announced she would play Steffi Graf on May 17 as part of a series of exhibition matches at Wimbledon to test out the conditions under the new retractable roof on Centre Court.

She is also scheduled to play a June 14 exhibition at the Ordina Open in Rosmalen against Michaella Krajicek, plus two matches for the St. Louis Aces in the World Team Tennis league this summer.

Clijsters reached four Grand Slam finals and won 34 singles titles overall. She won two Grand Slam doubles titles and held the No. 1 ranking for 19 weeks.

Scott leaves WTA to become Pac-10 commissioner

Larry Scott will become the Pac-10 Conference commissioner on July 1 after six years as chairman and chief executive officer of the WTA Tour.

Scott will remain with the women's professional tennis circuit into June, the tour said Tuesday. He will work with the tour board to select his successor.

``It was not an easy decision. I've been in tennis my whole life,'' Scott said in a telephone interview Tuesday night. ``I realized after 20 years that I maybe had done the most I could do in this sport.''

He became the CEO of the WTA in 2003, after having been ATP chief operating officer and president of ATP Properties. Under his watch, the WTA pushed for - and got - equal prize money for women at Wimbledon and the French Open.

``Despite all the financial success and commercial success, by far the achievement I'm most proud of is equal prize money,'' Scott said.

His biggest disappointment as he prepares to leave?

``I regret that I couldn't convince the men's tour that a merger with the women's tour would make sense by making tennis a bigger, stronger enterprise,'' Scott said.

He said he was first approached about the Pac-10 job in January.

``He brings a lot of great skills and experience to the job,'' said Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby, who led the Pac-10's search and screening committee.

``He has great experience in branding. He has great experience in sponsorship development and in television negotiations,'' Bowlsby said in a telephone interview. ``He has the right energy to build upon a great foundation with the Pac-10.''

Scott will take over for Tom Hansen, who announced his retirement last June after 26 years, making him the longest-tenured Division I conference commissioner in the country.

Bowlsby said his committee began work last August and forwarded the names of four candidates to the conference presidents.

The Pac-10's member schools ``are craving different, more media exposure, more commercial success where it's possible, innovative and different ways to promote the conference - all things I feel I've done before,'' Scott said.

Scott's announcement that he is leaving the tour comes a little more than a month after perhaps the biggest controversy of his stay: Israeli tennis player Shahar Peer was denied a visa by the United Arab Emirates and wasn't able to compete in the Dubai Tennis Championships.

The WTA eventually fined the tournament's organizers a record $300,000 and made them post a $2 million performance guarantee to ensure Peer and other Israeli players won't be shut out of future tournaments in the UAE.

Under Scott, according the tour, it has seen a 500 percent increase in sponsorship revenue, a 250 percent increase in overall revenues, a 40 percent increase in prize money and $710 million in new stadium investments.

He helped the tour land the largest sponsorship deal in the history of women's sports with Sony Ericsson at $88 million over six years. The announcement of his resignation came on the eve of the start of the Sony Ericsson Open on Key Biscayne.

``Under Larry's leadership, the tour and our sport have grown over the past six years beyond anyone's wildest expectations,'' said Steve Simon, tournament board representative and chairman of the tournament council.

Scott helped the tour change its calendar and rules to shorten the season and lessen the strain on players, and it landed the largest deal for the year-end championships, putting them in Doha, Qatar, for 2008-10.

Innovations under Scott included electronic line-calling, on-court coaching, pre-match player interviews and a new doubles scoring format.

BREE, Belgium (AP) -Former No. 1-ranked player Kim Clijsters announced her return to the tennis circuit Thursday after two years in retirement.

``The hunger is back,'' the 25-year-old Belgian said. ``I look forward to the challenge.''

Clijsters, who retired in May 2007 to get married and start a family, announced her comeback at the tennis facility in Bree, Belgium, where she has been practicing recently.

She said she has already requested wild cards for hard-court tournaments in Cincinnati and Toronto in August and the U.S. Open.

``I want to be back at my peak as soon as possible, but I know that is not logical to ask that,'' Clijsters said. ``I will have to take it match by match.''

Clijsters won the 2005 U.S. Open for her only Grand Slam title. She won 34 career titles overall and was runner-up at four majors.

Rising to the top at the same time as another Belgian who retired early, Justine Henin, Clijsters held the No. 1 singles ranking for 19 weeks.

Her career was marred by a series of injuries, including to her hip and back.

Clijsters, who gave birth to a daughter last year, returns at a time when the WTA tour is wide open and without a single player dominating the rankings.

Clijsters was already set to join Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi and Tim Henman for a series of exhibition matches at Wimbledon on May 17 to test conditions under the new retractable roof on Centre Court.

She also is scheduled to play an exhibition June 14 against Michaella Krajicek in the Netherlands, along with two matches for the St. Louis Aces of World Team Tennis in July.

О, это как луч света в темном царстве женского тенниса.
Давно нужно было вернуться. Такие сладкие условия сейчас, когда конкуренты уровня Ким только Винус и Сирина. Правда нужно набрать форму уровня 2005 или хотя бы 2003 года. Надеюсь, она сможет.

Ларри Скотт уходит с надеждой на объединение туров

Перед началом турнира Sony Ericsson Open, ежегодно проходящего в Майами в марте, на официальном сайте женского тура было объявлено, что Ларри Скотт, руководивший WTA последние шесть лет, оставит свой пост 1 июля и займёт должность комиссионера в NCAA’s Pac-10 Conference (ассоциации студенческого спорта в западных штатах США). А в ближайшее время ему предстоит вместе с руководителями тура поработать над поисками своего преемника на должность председателя и исполнительного директора WTA.

В своём заявлении Ларри Скотт отметил: "Популярность женского тенниса сейчас велика как никогда, бизнес-позиции тура чрезвычайно сильны, а блестящая команда менеджеров находится на своём месте. Сейчас для меня самое подходящее время, чтобы начать решение новых задач, связанных с семьёй и личными планами, время освободить место новому поколению руководителей тура".

Однако в телефонном интервью, которое Скотт дал Tennis.com в среду, были названы две другие главные причины, которые заставили успешного руководителя оставить свои должности в женском туре. Во-первых, это изнурительный график поездок, который не позволял ему большую часть времени быть рядом со своей женой и тремя маленькими детьми. Во-вторых, тупиковая ситуация, которая сложилась по вопросу объединения WTA Tour и ATP Tour.

Скотт заявил, что принял решение стать комиссионером ассоциации только в марте, но стал подумывать об уходе из WTA ещё в конце прошлого года. Сомнения у него появились после того, как представители ATP Tour попытались вступить с ним в переговоры, предлагая должность исполнительного директора этой организации. "Мне предлагали работу в ATP, и я ответил "нет", потому что не был в этом заинтересован. Но я считаю, что наш спорт нуждается в том, чтобы раскрыть весь свой потенциал, а для этого необходимо объединение WTA и ATP, - сказал Скотт в интервью. – Я глубоко убеждён, что это должно случиться. Руководитель женского тенниса не полетел в этом году в январе на Australian Open, турнир, который он не пропускал в течение 20 лет. За эти годы он побывал профессиональным игроком, поработал на разных должностях в ATP и WTA. Ларри рассказал, что решил пропустить турнир "Большого шлема", поэтому совещание игроков, которое обычно проходило в Мельбурне, было в этом году перенесено в Майами. И время, которое он провёл дома, дало ему возможность задуматься о своей карьере.

"В прошлом году я был вдали от дома 140 дней, - говорит Скотт. – И последние два месяца, которые я провёл без путешествий, открыли мне глаза на то, что именно я пропустил и чего был лишён эти годы". Но, несмотря на это, решение уйти из WTA не было простым. Дело в том, что большая часть жизни Ларри прошла в теннисе: сначала он был одним из лучших юниоров, затем учился в Гарварде и играл с успехом за свой университет, занимал различные должности сначала в ATP, а затем и в WTA. "И если бы объединение ATP и WTA было возможно, - сказал Ларри с горькой усмешкой, - то мы бы с вами сейчас не беседовали".

Скотт также рассказал, что он вместе со своей семьёй собирается переехать из американского Санкт-Петербурга в Сан-Франциско, где планирует заниматься новой работой. Он считает, что Pac-10 является учреждением, в чём-то аналогичным WTA до того, как он туда пришёл. По оценке Скотта, у него такой же огромный нереализованный потенциал. Также он считает, что последние годы для WTA были самыми успешными: призовые деньги намного увеличились и достигли равенства с мужским туром, был достигнут большой прогресс в представительстве женского тенниса в странах Азии и Ближнего Востока. Для ведущих теннисисток появились новые маркетинговые возможности, особенно это касается спонсорских контрактов, суммы которых выросли многократно.

Скотт также сказал, что история с турниром в Дубае, где отказали во въездной визе израильтянке Шахар Пеэр, не имеет ничего общего с его решением уйти в отставку. Конечно, некоторые горячие головы подвергли его критике за то, что он не приостановил турнир. Но Ларри остаётся при своём мнении и считает, что нет худа без добра: "Энди Рам, израильский парный игрок, был допущен в Дубай неделю спустя. И теперь, когда история завершилась, её можно рассматривать как дипломатический переворот, в результате чего правительство изменило свою политику в течение пяти дней".

К успехам женского тенниса, достигнутым за последние шесть лет при Скотте, относят:
1) реформу календаря и план "Дорожная карта";
2) достижение равных призовых с мужчинами на "Ролан Гаррос" и Уимблдоне, а также 10 крупнейших турнирах;
3) подписание крупнейшего в истории женского спорта и профессионального тенниса спонсорского соглашения с Sony Ericsson на $ 88 миллионов и сделки с другими крупными партнёрами, как, например, Whirlpool и Dubai Duty Free;
4) подписание с "Евроспортом" крупнейшего телевизионного контракта в истории тура;
5) подписание контрактов на заключительные чемпионаты в Мадриде, Дохе и Стамбуле на общую сумму $ 84 миллиона;
6) глобальная экспансия на новых рынках, включая новую штаб-квартиру в Пекине;
7) глобальная маркетинговая кампания "Ищешь героя?" и многие другие новшества. Впечатляет и цифра в $ 710 миллионов долларов, вложенных в строительство теннисных стадионов.

Многие игроки уже успели прокомментировать заявление Скотта об отставке. В частности, первая ракетка мира Серена Уильямс выразила сожаление: "Мне жаль видеть, что Ларри совершает такой поворот в своей профессиональной карьере, - сказала она. – Он был настоящим лидером WTA и очень много сделал для игроков. Я желаю ему и его семье всего хорошего в их новой жизни".

Сильнейшая парная теннисистка Лизель Хубер высказала мнение, что уход Скотта станет потерей для WTA: "Я была очень удивлена, когда услышала об этом. Тур добился очень серьёзного прогресса под руководством Ларри, было введено много новшеств и изменений, которые, несомненно, пошли на пользу WTA. Думаю, что мы все будем очень сильно скучать по Скотту".

Вообще-то еще в прошлый раз я спросила у знакомого врача-инфекциониста про обострения моно, и ответ был очень поганым - мононуклеоз бывает один раз, обострений у него не бывает, повторение крайне редко, как у ветрянки или кори... Этот врач мне сказал, что это скорее всего под моно маскируется какая-то другая гадость...
Очень-очень жалко парня!!!!

Tennis player Volandri's 3-month doping ban lifted

ROME (AP) -Tennis player Filippo Volandri's three-month ban for using an asthma drug has been lifted following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Switzerland-based court also ruled that Volandri will be restored the ATP points and earnings he lost, the Italian tennis federation said Tuesday.

The only punishment that will remain will be the elimination of Volandri's points and earnings at a tournament a year ago in Indian Wells, Calif., where he lost in the first round and failed a doping test.

Volandri was suspended by the International Tennis Federation on the eve of the Australian Open in January. The ban was due to expire on April 14.

``The nightmare is over,'' Volandri said. ``CAS recognized my good faith. I used the drug only for therapeutic needs and the ban was excessive.''

Volandri claimed he had a severe asthma attack the night before his match in Indian Wells and was forced to take more of the drug, salbutamol, than the allowed amount.

``Finally I can start playing again,'' he said. ``I didn't skip one day of training.''

CAS made the ruling last week but did not announce its decision. Details will be released sometime in the next few weeks.

Volandri indicated he will sue the ITF.

``Someone made a mistake and will pay for it,'' he said.

Under the initial ruling by the ITF, all of Volandri's results from March 13 onward were voided, including about $166,000 in prize money won and ATP points gained over a nine-month period.

Last year, Volandri finished out of the top 100 for the first time since 2002, at No. 109. After February, he didn't win consecutive matches on the ATP tour, though he won two challenger events.

Volandri said he would ask the ATP to restore his ranking and that he would aim to play in the French Open.

``It should just be a formality,'' Volandri said. ``If not, I'll roll my sleeves up and start over with the smaller tournaments. I'm already planning to play (next week) in Monza.''

Тель-Авив утвержден местом проведения четвертьфинального матча Кубка Дэвиса между сборными Израиля и России.

Израильтяне, как принимающая сторона этого матча, долго не могла определиться с местом его проведения, выбирая между Тель-Авивом и Рамат ха-Шароном. ITF дала Израильской ассоциации тенниса двухнедельную отсрочку, дело даже едва не дошло до судебного разбирательства. В итоге чаша весов склонилась в пользу столичной арены Nokia Stadium, на которой домашние матчи проводит баскетбольный клуб «Маккаби».

Мужская и женская сборная Израиля последние 22 домашних матча в командных теннисных турнирах провела на открытом стадионе в Рамат ха-Шароне. Однако израильтяне решили, что более вместительная Nokia Stadium лучше подходит для второго в истории страны (и первого – с 1987 года) четвертьфинального матча Кубка Дэвиса.

Бывший третий номер рейтинга ATP хорват Иван Любичич на турнире в Касабланке одержал юбилейную 350-ю победу в карьере, обыграв в первом круге восьмого сеяного француза Арно Клемана со счетом 7-6, 5-7, 6-4.

Хорват подал 16 эйсов и одержал 7 победу над Клеманом подряд, сделав общий счет противостояния с французом 7-2. В этом сезоне Любичич одержал 7 побед при 7 поражениях.

В следующем круге турнира в Касабланке хорвату будет противостоять португалец Фредерико Жил, обыгравший в первом круге испанца Альберто Мартина, сообщает официальный сайт ATP.

If darkness sets and other matches can't finish due to light, do they get to move onto center court? Of course, somewhat lost in all the hoopla is the fact that the roof is only over center court. Australia to boycott going to Chennai for Davis Cup tie

Australia will not go to Chennai for the Davis Cup tie against India next month, Tennis Australia announced today.

The decision follows the International Tennis Federation board’s rejection overnight of a Tennis Australia appeal to shift the tie out of India because of security concerns.

“We asked for the tie to be moved because we have major security concerns for the players, particularly during the election,” Tennis Australia president Geoff Pollard explained.

“The ITF decision has left us with no other option,” Mr Pollard said. “We cannot send the team. It is extremely disappointing.”

“It would be irresponsible of us to send our players into an area of such high risk. Davis Cup is very important to us but some things are more important than tennis,” he said.

Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald said he was angry and upset with the ITF decision.

“It is just irresponsible. Surely some thought must be given to the players’ safety.

“I believe they say the election is not a cause for concern, the IPL moving is not relevant and that an ATP tournament held in January shows it is safe to play in Chennai.

“So what about the fact that dozens of people are being killed along the campaign trail of the election? A train was hijacked this week, but that does not alter their thoughts? Did the IPL move for no reason,” Fitzgerald asked.

“The ATP event involved no national teams and was held three months prior to the election. This decision makes no sense. We have worked so hard to get back in to World Group contention, to have it snatched away like this is gut wrenching,” he said.

Fitzgerald said the players shared his disappointment and still hoped for an ITF change of heart prior to May 8.

Fears Australia's boycott may end Lleyton Hewitt's Davis Cup career

Australia has boycotted next month's tie against India in Chennai for security concerns, which is likely to spell the end of Lleyton Hewitt's stellar Davis Cup career.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) rejected Australia's request for a neutral venue for the May 8-10 tie and insisted it go ahead in Chennai - a decision Tennis Australia (TA) boss Geoff Pollard slammed as "irresponsible."

The stand-off may well mean that Hewitt never plays for his country again after winning more Davis Cup singles matches than any other Australian.

"It could easily happen. He will consider his response but this could spell the end of his Cup career which would be disappointing," his manager David Drysdale said.

Pollard said it was unreasonable to expect the Australian team to travel to India in the midst of elections which had created an unstable situation with several people killed.

He said the ITF and India had refused to meet the security requirements TA demanded for the team to travel to India.

Australia must now wait to see what penalty it will be given for pulling out of the match with sanctions ranging from fines to a one-year suspension.

The Davis Cup website specifies that if a country pulls out of a tie it will be suspended from the competition for the following year.

Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald was furious with the ITF's stance.

"Surely some thought must be given to the players' safety," Fitzgerald said.

"I believe they say the election is not a cause for concern, the Indian Premier League moving (to South Africa) is not relevant and that an ATP tournament held in January shows it is safe to play in Chennai.

"So what about the fact that dozens of people are being killed along the campaign trail of the election?

"A train was hijacked this week, but that does not alter their thoughts? Did the IPL move for no reason?" Fitzgerald asked.

"The ATP event involved no international teams and was held three months prior to the election.
"This decision makes no sense. We have worked so hard to get back into the World Group contention, to have it snatched away like this is gut wrenching."

Pollard said there was no question of the team going under the circumstances.

"Let me say that it is disappointing but it would be irresponsible of us our team and our support staff to go to India during the election period," Pollard said.

"Australia is probably the greatest supporter of Davis Cup so it is difficult but the safety of our team is paramount.

"We gave the ITF and therefore the Indians a list of the security requirements that we had for our team to be there and they will not meet those security requirements."

Pollard said the demands for team security were "reasonably close to what you would give to a head of state and (we) feel that was appropriate in the circumstances."

"They were providing security but nothing like the level we asked for," he said.

Pollard said it would be unreasonable for the ITF to suspend Australia for 2010 or to demote the country to Zone Four.

"I would expect something a lot, lot less than that because it is an unacceptable risk," Pollard said.

"I don't think any sanction is appropriate because we have given them a lot of evidence that the risk is unacceptable - but that's up to them."

Pollard said the ITF had a report from one consulting company which told them the security concerns "could be dismissed."

Pollard said it would take "some time" before the sanction was known.

TA had called for a neutral venue for the tie but the ITF said on Friday they were satisfied with the security conditions in Chennai.

Fox Sports tennis commentator and former Davis Cup coach Wally Masur said the decision to pull out was carefully constructed by Tennis Australia.

“Tennis Australia went through a whole process of doing a security analysis when the tie was announced in Chennai, and based on a lot of the information they got and talking to the Australian government, they decided it would be wise to have the tie moved," Masur said on Fox Sports News.

“It wasn’t something done lightly by Tennis Australia."

Masur also commented on Australia's possible one-year suspension.

“My understanding is that if we are suspended until 2011, we actually will go down another tier. It would take us another three years to get back into the World Group.

ITF declares Australia forfeits Davis Cup tie and India is the victor

The ITF regrets and respectfully disagrees with the decision of Tennis Australia to default its upcoming Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group I third round tie against India, scheduled to be played in Chennai on 8-10 May.

By virtue of its decision not to send a team to compete against India, Australia has forfeited the tie. India is declared the winner and will advance to the Davis Cup World Group Play-offs, scheduled for 18-20 September. The draw for the Play-off Round will be held on 12 May at the ITF Offices in Roehampton.

The ITF, as it does for every Davis Cup and Fed Cup tie, asked the host nation to produce a comprehensive security plan for the tie. Tennis Australia received the completed security questionnaire from the All India Tennis Association; however, because of the specific concerns of Tennis Australia, the ITF also asked its independent security consultants, the Olive Group, to make a site visit to Chennai to investigate both the situation on the ground and to assess the security arrangements put in place by AITA.

Following the site visit, the Olive Group reported that it was satisfied that the tie could go ahead as planned. Tennis Australia received a copy of the Olive Group report. This, and other information related to the tie, was presented to the Davis Cup Committee, who voted that the tie should proceed in Chennai. Following an appeal by Tennis Australia, the ITF Board of Directors voted to uphold the decision of the Davis Cup Committee, after having received complete documentation for review.

The Davis Cup Committee in due course will decide any sanctions to be assessed against Australia according to the Regulations of the 2009 Competition

все это грандиозное строительство связано с личностью и, есссно, деньгами, Иона Тириака. мне уже приходилось о нем выкладывать инфу на основном форуме. он в таких делах товарисч основательный, чего только 3 (!) корта под крышей стоят. так вот, если вспомнить (а Santoro со sports.ru, похоже, помнит), то Тириак года два назад говорил, что он бы в принципе хотел переноса грунтового шлема в Мадрид и что он может все для этого обеспечить не хуже, чем в Париже. вот, обеспечил...

Несмотря на то, что китайский стадион Ци Чжун в Шанхае прослужил верой и правдой для турниров АТР всего пять лет, местные власти почти новый стадион собираются переоборудовать.
Дело в том, что в октябре здесь будет проходить турнир серии Masters 1000, который заменит заключительный чемпионат года, переехавший в этом году в Лондон. Организаторы хотят, чтобы все прошло без сучка и задоринки. Они даже пригласили Роджера Федерера, клиента главного спонсора турнира, Рафаэля Надаля и ещё нескольких звезд мирового масштаба для популяризации грядущих соревнований.

Планируется, что реконструкция закончится к августу, как раз за два месяца до начала турнира. Прошлогодние чемпионаты Masters Cup были настоящим зрелищем и собрали численную аудиторию. В этом году ожидается около 15,000 зрителей из шестнадцатимиллионного города.

«Это прекрасный шанс для зрителей посмотреть турнир такого формата. Это не просто соревнования или громкий матч между теннисистами. Французский теннисист Ришар Гаске, снимающийся со второго турнира подряд из-за травмы локтя, уличён в употреблении кокаина, сообщает авторитетное издание L'Equipe. По информации источника, следы сильного наркотического средства были обнаружены в моче и крови спортсмена.

В ходе турнира АТР во Флориде у 22-летнего Гаске были взяты анализы, проверенные антидопинговым агентством. Судя по медицинским аспектам, содержание наркотика превысило максимально установленную норму на 0,5 микрограмма.

French tennis star Richard Gasquet tested positive for cocaine after the Miami Masters, according to L'Equipe.

Traces of a recreational drug, believed to be cocaine, were discovered in his 'A' sample, according to many media sources including the sports daily, which specifically identified the drug as cocaine.

Gasquet, the world number 23 and a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, pulled out of his opening match in Miami against Spain's Albert Montanes because of a shoulder injury.

The 22-year-old withdrew from this week's tournament in Estoril with a neck injury and is not playing at the Madrid Masters, which began on Saturday.

Gasquet, who could be banned for two years if his 'B' sample also tests positive, was unavailable for comment.

Cocaine has proved the downfall of a number of high-profile sportsmen in recent years including football legend Diego Maradona while, earlier on Saturday, world champion cyclist Tom Boonen was suspended by his team for a second positive test for the drug.

In 2007, former women's world number one Martina Hingis tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon and although the Swiss player denied she had taken the drug, she was banned for two years.

However, Hingis had already announced her retirement before the suspension was handed down.

Considered one of tennis's brightest talents, and a potential Grand Slam title winner, Gasquet reached a career high of seventh in the world in 2007, just after reaching the last four at Wimbledon.

But he endured a nightmare 2008 where he lost his place as French number one and saw his star eclipsed by the likes of Gilles Simon, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils.

He enjoyed a respectable start to 2009 with semi-final places in Brisbane, Sydney and Dubai.

Федерация тенниса Франции выступила с официальным заявлением по отношению к разгоревшемуся скандалу, связанного с уличением Ришара Гаске в употреблении кокаина. Напомним, что в субботу, 9 мая, авторитетное издание L'Equipe обнародовало информацию о том, что допинг-проба Гаске, взятая в ходе турнира в Майами, дала положительный результат на содержание наркотических веществ.

FFT – Французская федерация тенниса – осведомлена о положительной допинг-пробе «А» Ришара Гаске, которая показала наличие кокаина, но ожидает официального подтверждения.

«FFT изучила положительный тест Ришара Гаске, взятый во время турнира в Майами, однако никакого официального заявления пока не сделано.

Эта информация не вяжется с личностью Ришара Гаске, но если она подтвердится официально, это станет печальной новостью для самого Гаске, тенниса в целом и для французского тенниса особенно, имиджу которого будет нанесен существенный урон», – отмечается в коммюнике FFT.
FFT не хочет раньше времени комментировать информацию с моральной точки зрения, оставляя 23-й ракетке мира право «организовать свою защиту в международных инстанциях». Также французская федерация не собирается вмешиваться в это дело, которое находится в компетенции ITF, сообщает РИА Новости.

Напомним, что следы кокаина были обнаружены в допинг-пробе, взятой 28 марта во время турнира серии Masters в Майами сразу после того, как Гаске из-за рецидива травмы плеча снялся с соревнований. Согласно новому антидопинговому кодексу кокаин входит в список веществ, запрещенных к использованию в соревновательный период. Gasquet said in a statement Sunday that the “B” sample from the tournament in Key Biscayne, Fla., confirmed the result of the “A” sample taken the same day.

“Given the complexity of this dossier, I am gathering together proof of my innocence and I will choose an appropriate moment to express myself,” Gasquet said.

The Web site of sports daily L’Equipe had reported Saturday that traces of the banned drug were found in the 22-year-old Gasquet’s urine sample at the Sony Ericsson Open. He withdrew after the first round, citing a shoulder injury.

The French tennis federation called the report “very surprising” and said Sunday it would wait for official confirmation before taking any action. He could face a two-year ban.

The FFT said in a statement that it “would be very sad for Richard Gasquet himself, for tennis in general, for French tennis in particular, whose image would be dented” if the positive test was officially confirmed.

The federation said it won’t act until notified to do so by the governing body of tennis and the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Gasquet, who reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2007, is ranked 23rd.

PARIS (AP) -Plans for a new retractable roof at Roland Garros are moving forward.

The roof is scheduled to be ready in 2011 to prevent rain delays at the French Open.

The French Tennis Federation chose an architect Wednesday, unanimously voting for Marc Mimram. Mimram is well known as the designer of the overpass that connects France and Germany across the Rhine River in Strasbourg.

The new roof at Roland Garros will cover the center court. The courts in a planned extension not far away from the main stadium are also set to get roofs.

Wimbledon is using a retractable roof on its center court for the first time this year.

Сборная Австралии не будет дисквалифицирована за отказ от участия в матче Кубка Дэвиса с командой Индии в Ченнае, сообщает официальный сайт турнира. Австралийцы лишатся права выбора покрытия в следующем домашнем матче, а также выплатят штраф в размере $ 10 тыс.

На «Уимблдоне» будет построен новый корт

Новый корт будет построен на месте старого корта номер два, больше известного как «могила для чемпионов». Корт получит название «корт №3», его вместимость составит 2000 мест. Работы начнутся в июле 2009 года и должны быть завершены к старту «Уимблдона»-2011, сообщает РИА Новости.

На траве старого корта №2 сенсационное поражение потерпел не один фаворит. Так, именно здесь свой последний матч на «Уимблдоне» провел семикратный победитель соревнований Пит Сампрас, проигравший малоизвестному швейцарцу Георгу Бастлю во втором круге в 2002 году.

Напомним, что этом году на «Уимблдоне» впервые будет задействован новый корт №2, также в этом году дебютирует раздвижная крыша над Центральным кортом
