Матч на Кубок Дэвиса впервые за всю историю соревнований пройдет в Ливерпуле. Этот город сборная Великобритании выбрала для поединка против команды Польши в рамках первой группы зоны Европа/Африка, который пройдет 18-20 сентября, сообщает РИА Новости.
Матч пройдет на харде под крышей, на Echo Arena, которая вмещает, согласно сайту Кубка Дэвиса, от 4 до 5 тысяч человек.
Сборные Великобритании и Польши семь раз играли друг против друга в Кубке Дэвиса, и во всех случаях побеждали британцы. В последний раз сборные встречались в 1991 году в Польше, и тогда гости выиграли со счетом 4-1.

Стадион, принимавший заключительный турнир в Шанхае, собираются переооборудовать  Несмотря на то, что китайский стадион Ци Чжун в Шанхае прослужил верой и правдой для турниров АТР всего пять лет, местные власти почти новый стадион собираются переоборудовать. Дело в том, что в октябре здесь будет проходить турнир серии Masters 1000, который заменит заключительный чемпионат года, переехавший в этом году в Лондон. Организаторы хотят, чтобы все прошло без сучка и задоринки. Они даже пригласили Роджера Федерера, клиента главного спонсора турнира, Рафаэля Надаля и ещё нескольких звезд мирового масштаба для популяризации грядущих соревнований. Планируется, что реконструкция закончится к августу, как раз за два месяца до начала турнира. Прошлогодние чемпионаты Masters Cup были настоящим зрелищем и собрали численную аудиторию. В этом году ожидается около 15,000 зрителей из шестнадцатимиллионного города. «Это прекрасный шанс для зрителей посмотреть турнир такого формата. Гаске уличён в употреблении кокаина
Французский теннисист Ришар Гаске, снимающийся со второго турнира подряд из-за травмы локтя, уличён в употреблении кокаина, сообщает авторитетное издание L'Equipe. По информации источника, следы сильного наркотического средства были обнаружены в моче и крови спортсмена.
В ходе турнира АТР во Флориде у 22-летнего Гаске были взяты анализы, проверенные антидопинговым агентством. Судя по медицинским аспектам, содержание наркотика превысило максимально установленную норму на 0,5 микрограмма.

French tennis star Richard Gasquet tested positive for cocaine after the Miami Masters, according to L'Equipe.
Traces of a recreational drug, believed to be cocaine, were discovered in his 'A' sample, according to many media sources including the sports daily, which specifically identified the drug as cocaine.
Gasquet, the world number 23 and a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, pulled out of his opening match in Miami against Spain's Albert Montanes because of a shoulder injury.
The 22-year-old withdrew from this week's tournament in Estoril with a neck injury and is not playing at the Madrid Masters, which began on Saturday.
Gasquet, who could be banned for two years if his 'B' sample also tests positive, was unavailable for comment.
Cocaine has proved the downfall of a number of high-profile sportsmen in recent years including football legend Diego Maradona while, earlier on Saturday, world champion cyclist Tom Boonen was suspended by his team for a second positive test for the drug.
In 2007, former women's world number one Martina Hingis tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon and although the Swiss player denied she had taken the drug, she was banned for two years.
However, Hingis had already announced her retirement before the suspension was handed down.
Considered one of tennis's brightest talents, and a potential Grand Slam title winner, Gasquet reached a career high of seventh in the world in 2007, just after reaching the last four at Wimbledon.
But he endured a nightmare 2008 where he lost his place as French number one and saw his star eclipsed by the likes of Gilles Simon, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils.
He enjoyed a respectable start to 2009 with semi-final places in Brisbane, Sydney and Dubai.

PARIS (AP)—French tennis player Richard Gasquet confirmed that he tested positive for cocaine at the Sony Ericsson Open in March, but maintained his innocence.
Gasquet said in a statement Sunday that the “B” sample from the tournament in Key Biscayne, Fla., confirmed the result of the “A” sample taken the same day.
“Given the complexity of this dossier, I am gathering together proof of my innocence and I will choose an appropriate moment to express myself,” Gasquet said.
The Web site of sports daily L’Equipe had reported Saturday that traces of the banned drug were found in the 22-year-old Gasquet’s urine sample at the Sony Ericsson Open. He withdrew after the first round, citing a shoulder injury.
The French tennis federation called the report “very surprising” and said Sunday it would wait for official confirmation before taking any action. He could face a two-year ban.
The FFT said in a statement that it “would be very sad for Richard Gasquet himself, for tennis in general, for French tennis in particular, whose image would be dented” if the positive test was officially confirmed.
The federation said it won’t act until notified to do so by the governing body of tennis and the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Gasquet, who reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2007, is ranked 23rd.

Richard Gasquet's hopes of diminishing a possible suspension from tennis following a positive drug test may hinge on his hair.
The 22-year-old Frenchman today confirmed published reports that he tested positive for cocaine at the Sony Ericsson Open in March. Gasquet said both his A and B urine samples tested positive for cocaine. His confirmation comes a day after the French daily L'Equipe reported traces of cocaine were found in Gasquet's A sample in Miami.
"The B sample test from March 2009, during the Miami tournament, in which I did not take part, confirms the positive results from the A sample," Gasquet said in a statement today. "I am gathering together proof of my innocence and I will choose an appropriate moment to express myself." Gasquet is expected to undergo an independent hair test in an effort to refute the positive tests of both of his urine samples.
The French Tennis Federation announced it would refrain from taking action against Gasquet until it receives official confirmation of his positive test from the International Tennis Federation and World Anti-Doping Agency, which conducts tennis' drug tests.
"(It) would be very sad for Richard Gasquet himself, for tennis in general, for French tennis in particular, whose image would be dented (if the positive test was officially confirmed)," the French Tennis Federation said in a statement. "The FFT will follow developments in this affair with the greatest attention, will avoid passing a hasty moral judgment and take care to leave the player to organize his defense. If the facts are nevertheless proven, it would be particularly regrettable in view of all the efforts the FFT makes with players about (drug) prevention."
The 23rd-ranked Gasquet was a junior phenom touted for stardom when he appeared on the cover of the French Tennis Magazine as a nine-year-old junior in February of 1996. The son of tennis coaches, Gasquet solidified his status as a true tennis talent when he received a wild card into the Monte Carlo qualifying tournament and at the age of 15 years, 10 months defeated Adrian Voinea and Nikolay Davydenko to reach the main draw. The teenager upset former French Open semifinalist Franco Squillari in the first round to become the youngest man to win an ATP main draw match since Tommy Ho at Rye Brook in 1998. Gasquet lost in the second round to Marat Safin, who said he was a potential top 25 player.
French veteran Fabrice Santoro, who has known Gasquet for years, characterized the former Wimbledon semifinalist as "sad and very shocked" by the positive test.
"I have known Richard since he was nine so I am very surprised," Santoro told French radio station Europe 1 in comments published by Reuters. "I know his lifestyle and I am extremely surprised because it does not fit the character. I spoke to him over the phone, he is sad and very shocked." |

The first goes to Sebastien Grosjean, while 17-year-old Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov and Kei Nishikori of Japan also received direct entry.
Frenchman Grosjean reached the final in 2003 and 2004 where he was defeated on both occasions by Andy Roddick. In both of those years, the jet-heeled 30-year-old also showed that the tournament at Queen’s is the perfect Wimbledon preparation by reaching the semi-finals at the All England Club. He will be hoping that the AEGON Championships in 2009 is the perfect launch-pad for a successful comeback to professional tennis after undergoing shoulder surgery last December.
Dimitrov is one of the most promising talents in the world and was recently described by coach Peter Lungren, who previously worked with Roger Federer and Marat Safin, as: ‘better than Federer at the same age’. He is currently at a career-high No.372 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, and still the No.2 junior player in the world despite not having played a junior event since winning the US Open last September.
Nishikori, 19, is currently the highest ranked teenager in the world at No.118, but he has been as high as No.56 after winning his first ATP World Tour title last year in Delray Beach. After several more impressive results in 2008, including a run to the last 16 at The Queen’s Club, Nishikori was voted the ATP Newcomer of the Year, becoming the first Asian player ever to win the award. He was beaten 6-4 3-6 6-3 by Nadal in the third round last year. Afterwards, Nadal said: “He is going to be a top 10 player for sure, maybe top five. I am 100 percent sure. He's a very talented player. He needs to improve a few little things, but he's going to be very good."
The three wild cards will join a field that already includes the World No.1 and defending champion Nadal, World No.3 Andy Murray and four-time champions Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick. James Blake, Marat Safin and Marin Cilic have also signed up to appear. The tournament still has two more wild cards to award. These will be announced in due course. |

Roland Garros moving forward on retractable roof

PARIS (AP) -Plans for a new retractable roof at Roland Garros are moving forward.
The roof is scheduled to be ready in 2011 to prevent rain delays at the French Open.
The French Tennis Federation chose an architect Wednesday, unanimously voting for Marc Mimram. Mimram is well known as the designer of the overpass that connects France and Germany across the Rhine River in Strasbourg.
The new roof at Roland Garros will cover the center court. The courts in a planned extension not far away from the main stadium are also set to get roofs.
Wimbledon is using a retractable roof on its center court for the first time this year.
